PENRITH
Caswell&Dainow purchased this back land site in Thornton Heath, and submitted planning for a unique sunken single-storey house designed around a large existing tree. The design embraces the restrictions of the back land site to form a sensitive yet compelling piece of architecture that works with its constraints rather then against them.
Due to the concealed nature of the site, the scheme’s roofline is its most visible element. We therefore transformed the roof into the principal façade, giving the project character and interest through its dynamic, conical roof form. As well as creating a unique aesthetic, the roof is also practical, with each cone defining the interior space below. Each space is topped with a skylight, flooding the building with natural light and atmosphere which changes hour by hour.
