Greenwich Park Gardens

Caswell&Dainow identified a large privately owned garden in Greenwich and negotiated with the owners to acquire a section of the land to the rear of their house. Working with Dowen Farmer Architects, HEARD Landscapes and MJP Planning, we are now in planning for 6 new residential dwellings, centred around a generous communal courtyard garden.

We never consider our developments in isolation, and instead think about how our proposals will help to create communities that can weave into the fabric of existing neighbourhoods. Our proposal for Greenwich Park embodies that philosophy, creating 6 family homes which positively engage with each other around a heavily landscaped shared courtyard.

The sociability of the scheme was central to our brief for Dowen Farmer Architects, as too was our decision to make it a car-free development, swapping parking spaces for wildflower boarders and 48 new native trees.  Heard Landscapes helped us shape the public realm around residents and families, rather than vehicles, to create a green space for occupants to share all year-round. The courtyard serves as the heart of the new community that will call Greenwich Park home.

Architecturally, a key concept was to develop a contemporary response to the architectural details found along the existing street. Whilst the massing for each unit is simple and consistent, elevational intrigue will be found in moments of architectural delight that echo the local context, such as arched windows, patterned brickwork and colourful and uniquely shaped tiles.

Attention to the impacts on both the outlook and privacy of both neighbours and the new homes themselves has been integral to the planning process. Our approach creates a sense of seclusion that enhances residents' comfort while avoiding a cramped atmosphere.

The development prioritises environmental sustainability by striving to meet biodiversity net gain targets. This commitment includes implementing additional tree planting and employing innovative landscaping techniques. These efforts are aimed at cultivating a thriving ecosystem, which ultimately enriches biodiversity in the area.
